How to Advance in Youth and Teen Belts at CVMA
Share
At Carson Valley Martial Arts, our program is designed to support consistent growth, confidence-building, and skill mastery — step by step. We do this through a structured cycle-based system that helps students stay motivated and on track toward their goals.
Here’s how it works:
⏱️ 9 Cycles Per Year — 1 Step at a Time
Each year is divided into 9 cycles, and every cycle is approximately 5 weeks long.
Each cycle focuses on specific martial arts techniques and character-building topics (which we call “mental minutes”) that help students grow both on and off the mat.
✅ Progress Stripes: Measuring Growth Along the Way
During each 5-week cycle, students work on mastering new skills. These might include techniques like:
-
Jab
-
Cross
-
Front Kick
-
Roundhouse
-
Side Step with Quick Defense
In addition to physical skills, we also cover mental topics such as self-control, confidence, respect, and more.
Once the student has 5 hours of training time, students will demonstrate understanding and improvement will earn progress stripes on their belts — a visible sign of their dedication and development.
🥋 Rank Promotion: Earn Your Next Belt
Once a student has successfully completed three full cycles (that’s about every 15 weeks), and have at least 15 hours of training time, they become eligible for rank promotion.
To earn their next belt, students must:
-
Demonstrate all required skills from all three cycles (as well as have two cycles of progress stripes) with efficiency and minimal correction
-
Show they understand and can apply the character lessons
-
Break a board during their test to symbolize power, focus, and confidence
🌱 Why This Matters
This system helps students:
-
Set short-term goals (progress stripes)
-
Stay focused with regular milestones (every 5 weeks)
-
Build long-term confidence (earning new belts)
-
Stay excited and engaged year-round
Whether your child is just starting their martial arts journey or growing through the ranks, the CVMA cycle system ensures progress that is structured, supportive, and empowering.
